<description>To say that AIG &quot;does not seem very stable&quot; is an overstatement - I would say they are totally brain dead and if taken off the life support currently being supplied by the U.S. Government, they’d be dead instantly. But you&#039;ve got to separate AIG corporate from their insurance company subsidiaries. Remember, insurance companies are regulated as separate entities by the states and at this time they appear to be well-capitalized and functioning well.

Granted, they have been painted as “guilty” by the AIG brush, but the rating agencies (A.M. Best, S&amp;P, Moody’s, etc.) continue to give them high marks. You will recall that initially AIG proposed to upstream the net worth of their insurance subs to AIG corporate, but the various state insurance commissioners nixed the proposal.

No doubt these insurance subsidiaries will be sold, but you’ve got to admit that now is probably not a good time since AIG corporate is hardly in a good position to negotiate. If you have money in VALIC or American General, both subs of AIG corporate, it is safe and there is no need to panic just because of AIG’s corporate problems. The state regulators are not going to permit AIG to “raid the coffers” of these insurance subsidiaries – you can count on this.
